Kneller Hall, a historic Grade II listed site in Twickenham, is undergoing a transformative redevelopment. This includes the demolition of existing structures, the construction of two new buildings and the refurbishment of three listed buildings. Originally built as the Royal Military School, the site is being repurposed into a state-of-the-art educational facility, combining historic preservation with modern sustainability principles.
SRE has been instrumental in ensuring sustainability is integrated into every stage of the Kneller Hall development. Alongside assessing the scheme under BREEAM Refurbishment & Fit Out and BREEAM New Construction, we have developed a Circular Economy Statement to promote resource efficiency and reduce environmental impact. This included selecting materials for longevity, managing waste in line with the waste hierarchy and considering the reuse potential of materials at end-of-life.
Through assessing the internal daylight across all floors of the education block, we were able to advise on optimal daylight levels supporting occupant health and productivity, while also achieving BREEAM daylighting credits.
Our Energy & Sustainability Statement demonstrated how energy efficiency measures and low and zero carbon (LZC) technologies reduce energy and water use beyond regulatory requirements.
To address occupant comfort, we conducted a Thermal Comfort Assessment using CIBSE TM52 standards. We recommended passive design measures such as solar control glazing, external shading and natural ventilation, alongside active solutions such as MVHR with a purge fan to minimise overheating risk. We produced a Whole Life Carbon Assessment to evaluate the development's embodied and operational carbon emissions over a 60-year lifespan. This included selecting renewable materials and integrating photovoltaic panels to reduce the site's overall carbon footprint.
Kneller Hall represents a harmonious blend of historic preservation and forward-thinking sustainability, setting a new benchmark for educational facilities.
